Previous Application Description

The Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE) invites applications for two post-doctoral training fellowships beginning in August 2007 at the Center for Integration of Research on Genetics and Ethics (CIRGE), a Center of Excellence in ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Energy. CIRGE seeks candidates from a variety of backgrounds, especially 1) genetic research, or 2) social sciences, humanities, law, or policy.  The fellowship aims to prepare fellows for interdisciplinary scholarship in emerging ethical, social, policy and/or legal issues raised by genetic research. The fellowships will be two-year appointments. Salary range in the mid 30s to mid 40s, commensurate with experience.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to qualify for funding. Stanford University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fellows will conduct independent ELSI research in behavioral and neurogenetic issues and have a range of additional opportunities, including participating in CIRGE intellectual life (an interdisciplinary community of scholars including geneticists/scientists, ethicists, lawyers, and physicians); taking coursework in genetics, ethics, or ELSI research methods; being involved in a research ethics consultation service for bioscientists; and helping to plan and participate in CIRGE symposia, policy workshops, and other events and programs aimed at forging interdiscliplinary dialog with genetics researchers.

Stanford University School of Medicine is committed to increasing representation of women and members of minority groups, and we particularly welcome applications from such candidates.

To apply, please submit a cover letter describing your reasons for applying, qualifications, and career goals; a 2-3 page research proposal; curriculum vita; 8-10 page writing sample; and contact information for 3 references. Review of applications will begin immediately. Deadline for submitting applications is January 1, 2007 and the positions are open until filled.
